Cinematography Blog Tasks:

Task 1:

In this film sequence, a lot of camera shots are used to convey a strong message. The first camera shot used is the Medium long shot. This is established as the boy walks in. This particular shot is used to suggest how nervous the boy is and as the camera is a little shaky as the boy walks, it shows he's not confident with what he is about to encounter. There is lots of open space in the background and as he walks across coming closer to the camera, we can identify that a mid shot is used as his bust to head is showing. The cinematographer uses a pan shot which is where the camera moves slowly on it's axis from side to side to follow the boy as he walks to emphasise the long journey that he takes to his mother. The boy looks around in an alarming way as he hears dogs barking in the distance which is closely followed by a woman calling 'Chiron' supposedly his name.

We are introduced to the mother through a long shot which shows a realistic scale of an object or human being. The use of this shot gives us a clear understanding of the type of  setting that the narrative is set in. As the woman approaches closer to the boy, a medium closeup shot is set on 'Chiron'. There is also lots of dead space in the background during this shot suggesting how small the subject is in comparison to the setting and also shows how the two subjects seem to be alone in the scene compared to the serene setting.

A closeup is set on the woman's face as she utters " Well I'm your mama aint I". This shot empahsises the power of the line that she recites and really heightens the emphasis on the relationship between the two.

Another closeup shot is captured on the boy's face as the top part of his head is cut off followed by another closeup shot on the woman's face. This continuous back and forth scheme of the closeup shots in this scene implies how important this conversation is between the two subjects. Through the deliberation of the lines and just mere facial expressions suggests that there is some sort of tension between the mother and son and this tension is portrayed through these closeup shots.

The medium closeup shot of the woman as she is walking away suggests that she is about to go somewhere. As they near the front door we have a continuation of the medium closeup shots and closeup shots to suggest that they are significant in what is happening in this scene.

When the mother comes down the stairs, she asks for money and the boy replies in "for what". This is all captured in a medium closeup shot. Soon after, an over the shoulder shot is captured which is taken behind one of the subject normally in the context of a conversation so that the person who is speaking can be seen and is visible in shot. This gives an insight of how the speaker is feeling and puts the audience in the perspective of the subject. As well as making the audience feel as if they were part of the conversation.

As things start to heat up between the two and the mother starts fighting for the money, medium closeup shots are captured as well as closeups of the boy's trousers (where the mother tries to get the money from his pocket).

As the boy gives her the money, lots of medium closeups and mid shots are captured as the scene nears it's end. As the boy stops halfway on the stairs, a medium closeup shot is catured to encapsulate him and him only.

Task 2:
Image result for find me in paris"

In this first film/TV still, a closeup shot is captured in the TV series Find Me in Paris. The subject seems to be quite anxious and nervous so to speak. We are able to identify this through her facial expressions. The use of the closeup shot emphasises this sense of nervousness as it transfers all the spotlight onto the subject as if all of the pressure is on her.

The dead space behind the subject makes her appear as inferior and scared in this scene. In terms of nose room (the space from the characters nose and the end of the frame), there is lots of space emphasising this inferiority.

As we see in this still, the subject seems to be looking at something behind the shot. This suggests that she may be performing a piece of dance to the class hence why she appears to be under pressure. (I know this because I have watched this series previously)

Image result for wolfblood"
This still from the TV series Wolfblood captures a Mid Shot. The usage of the mid shot allows the audience to focus on the two subjects. They seem to be in a forest and also seem quite anxious and alarmed. The mid shot captures the two subject's facial expressions as well as their body language beautifully as we are able to see clearly what is happening in this scene and are able to build our own interpretations of whats to come next through the subjects.

The wounds on the boy's face suggests that there is some sort of conflict and tension in this scene. The veins on the faces and the yellow eyes suggests elements of fantasy, supernatural and so this animal-like look hugely contrasts with the subject's clean and well ordered clothing.

This still is extremely gripping and also creates suspense for the audience!

Image result for fast and furious scenes"This still is from the film series Fast and Furious and an extreme long shot and is usually used for action scenes and the action genre in general. This shot helps portray the characters as invincible and powerful. In the background of Los Angeles, the six subjects appear to be standing in an orderly fashion as if they have just come back from saving the world (being the heroes in a situation).

This shot also gives an insight into the setting that the scene is set in. In this case, the beautiful tower-like buildings and where the characters are standing, almost creates a picturesque moment. This helps the audience to connect with the characters as well as keeps them engaged throughout the scene. It almost makes the audience feel as if they are in the scene with the characters.
