Print draft feedback and learner response

Current approximate print grade: B

Feedback:

Front cover:

  • This cover has some excellent creative touches – I really like the use of font and colour, the cover lines are convincing and you’ve got a range of images as the brief requires.
  • I’m not sure on the main image – should the cover star make eye contact with the audience? One to think about.
  • In terms of the secondary images, I wonder if there’s anything you can do in Photoshop because they feel quite ‘blocky’ if that makes sense. For example, sometimes people cut out the secondary images and have them towards the bottom of the page – this may not work for your design but I wonder if something similar is possible to make the overall page design smoother and more professional?
  • Check typos in places – very important the spelling is perfect for the final draft!
  • The text layout is the final area to address – designers try and avoid words being divided over two lines (apart from in the body text of a feature). Have a look over your design work to see if this needs addressing.
  • Check your front cover research for any conventions you need to add or remove (e.g. do page numbers tend to appear on front covers etc.)

Double-page spread feature/interview:

  • Same point on text layout/words over two lines.
  • Similarly, go back to your research and a look at how headlines and subheadings are used to introduce interview features – I think you’re missing an opportunity/convention here.
  • The article itself reads really well – convincing and authentic. The only feedback would be to check the written English – a couple of typos/incorrect words and some overly long sentences that are a little hard to read.
  • The interview could also refer to the music video perhaps? Check the brief on this one.

Tour poster

  • The tour poster looks great but there’s one issue for me – it seems to have the same ‘house style’ as the magazine cover but if we view the brief at a professional level the magazine would be designed by different people to the tour poster. Therefore, I would try and create a slightly different brand/graphic identity for the tour poster compared to the magazine (or vice versa – but I think it would probably be easier to change the tour poster slightly).
  • Other than that, I like the black and white image and the conventions are pretty much all there.
